Mausoleum of Omar Khayyam Nishabur Khorasan Omar Khayyam, who lived at the end of the 11th century, was both a poet and a mathematician - astronomer. He expressed in perfect quatrains a sense of metaphysical anxiety and a scorn for false consolations. After his death this type of pessimistic and script verse continued to be written by other poets. In the West Khayyam is famous for his Rubaiyat - a work also translated by langenhoven into Afrikaans - but in Iran he is rated as an average poet. |
