The Most Important Events of the 20th Century : The war imposed by Iraq on Iran .

In the name of God . Hello and welcome to another edition of our program The Most Important Events of the 20th Century.

In today’s program , we will talk on the eight year war imposed by Iraq on Iran as one of the major events of the 20th century .

On Monday September 22,1980 , the Iraqi Baatist army launched an extensive and an organized attack on Iran’s territory . The aggression which is referred to as one of the longest , bloodiest and most destructive and costly wars of the world after the world war two . For this reason , it has been placed in the 8 great wars of the 20th century .The Iranian nation bravely resisted against the widespread air , land and naval attack of the Iraqi army .

The unique feature which distinguished the war imposed by Iraq on Iran from the other wars after the world war two was that the main players of the international system namely the US and the Soviet Union along with the other powers supported the Iraqi regime during the 8 years war . The joint policy of the eastern and western blocs which were each others rivals on the international arena in supporting the Iraqi regime in its attack on Iran was rare in the history of international relations . On this basis , the initiator of war agaisnt Iran was not the Iraqi regime alone but many regional and international players were involved. Concerning the join objective of the big powers in helping Iraq to attack Iran , we should say that from the second decade of the 19th century onward , the big powers placed the suppression of any uprising , revolution and any event which put direct and inevitable impacts on the international balance in their agenda .
