Chronology of Events Leading to
the Iraqi-Imposed War
In the aftermath of the ministerial conference of the
Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) held in Vienna from the
4 to 6 March 1975, a joint declaration was issued by Iran and Iraq over the
settlement of mutual differences. The two countries undertook to:
1. Demarcate their land borders based on the 1913 Constantinople Protocol and
the minutes of the meetings of the Demarcation Commission in 1914.
2. Demarcate their marine borders based on the thawing line
3. Establish mutual security and trust alongside their
common borders and undertake to exercise strict and effective
supervision of their sides of the borders, in order to curb cross-border
incursions and acts of sabotage.
4. Affirm that the above points are the indisputable outlines of a solution, and
violation of any of the above points will mean the violation of the
(Mutual) Accord.
In a series of meetings on the 12 an 13 June 1975 in the presence of the
Algerian foreign minister,the foreign ministers of Iran and Iraq signed
documents over the demarcation of their land and marine borders.
